Tourism New Zealand has appointed a new general manager Australia, with Tony Saunders to step into the Sydney-based role freshly vacated by Tim Burgess.

Burgess’s two years as general manager Australia came to an end yesterday, following his December announcement he was leaving the organisation to take up a position in Auckland.

Currently regional marketing communications manager Australia, Saunders has worked with TNZ since January 2011.

“He will be a familiar figure to many in the industry having led the marketing communications development for a number of highly successful partner campaigns run in what is our largest source market,” director of trade, PR and major events Justin Watson said.

“Tony’s knowledge of and experience in Australia, existing relationships with trade partners on both sides of the Tasman, and proven success in working alongside the RTOs make him the perfect person for this role.

Watson highlighted Saunders’ 14 years of experience as a marketer, obtained in organisations including Campbell-Arnotts and Yums Restaurants.

Meanwhile, the tourism body also confirmed the appointment of David Craig to the position of general manager Asia – the role he is currently acting in.
