Governments told to learn from Middle East attitude

Governments told to learn from Middle East attitude

The Middle East has been highlighted as a great success story for the aviation industry by the International Air Transport Association, as it urged other areas to take note.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Arab Air Carriers Organisation (AACO), IATA chief executive Tony Tyler said the strength of the sector in the region is founded on a "spirit of cooperation" between industry and the government, a relationship not seen to the same extent elsewhere.

"In fact the Gulf example is a best practice success story that we are asking all governments to take note of," he said. "Even in this region it should not be taken for granted."

IATA has forecast a global industry net profit of US$11.7 billion this year, with Middle East airlines expected to contribute US$1.6 billion.

That outlook is expected to improve to US$16.4 billion globally next year with airlines in the Middle East to generate its highest ever net profit of US$2.1 billion.
