Tourism Fiji launches new international trade show

Tourism Fiji has confirmed it will launch a new international trade show in 2014, following its withdrawal of support from the annual Bula Fiji Tourism Exchange this year.

The inclusion of other Pacific nations in this year's BFTE event prompted the move, announced in April, with chief executive Rick Hamilton saying their representation risked damaging prospects for local tourism operators.

The new Fijian Tourism Expo (FTE) is designed to “promote and support” Fiji’s tourism industry only with the first event to take place at the new Sheraton Conference Centre in Denarau from May 5 to 8 2014, just weeks before BFTE.

“The FTE program will be tailored to cater for the needs of local industry and deliver a unique Fijian experience,”  Hamilton said. “We will look after all service providers, big and small, and provide a more effective way of promoting Fiji as an international visitor destination of choice.”

He was confident there would be sufficient demand for the new show to guarantee its success, with its Denarau location and lower prices expected to give it to the edge over its rival.

"We believe we will be a cheaper as we are not interested in making profit, just passing savings to our industry. We will also give very attractive options to buyers and media in air and accommodation."

The tourism body has appointed Sally Cooper as events and MICE director with FTE's organisation within her remit.

Hamilton highlighted Cooper’s extensive industry experience and wealth of contacts as a significant advantage for the tourism body which is currently undergoing significant change.

“She is also highly regarded by the international tourism industry and will bring all her expertise to the FTE to ensure its success,” he said.

Meanwhile, BFTE has confirmed it will still go ahead in 2014. The event will return to the InterContinental Fiji from May 26 to 28 with organisers proclaiming it will be "bigger and better" than this year's show.

“We are thrilled by the opportunity to welcome back the BFTE in 2014, and we are committed to making the event a success for buyers and sellers alike,” InterContinental general manager, Scott Williams, said.

“Following the success of this year’s BFTE event we are expecting the 2014 event to attract record numbers, including global buyers from the northern hemisphere, which will directly benefit the tourism industry in Fiji and the South Pacific as a whole."
