AirAsia to return to Darwin

AirAsia to return to Darwin
By admin

AirAsia will resume flights between Darwin and Bali following lobbying by Darwin Airport and the Northern Territory government.

The airline cancelled the route last year citing concentration on its high demand, high yield operations.

“We acknowledge the inconvenience caused by our withdrawal from this market a year ago,” AirAsia Indonesia commercial director Bernard Francis said.

“Darwin Airport and the Northern Territory Government have worked hard to get us back,” AirAsia Indonesia chief executive Captain Dharmadi said.

The government has hailed the airline’s return as a vote of confidence in the Territory.

“The Territory’s relationship with Indonesia is one of our most important, given that the country is both a key trading partner and a strategic partner in the Asian region,” Northern Territory chief minister Adam Giles said.

The growth of AirAsia Indonesia and record profits meant that the airline could reinstate the service, Francis added.

“We always felt that AirAsia Indonesia would resume operations when the time was right,” Northern Territory Airports director airline and airport services Jim Parashos said.

“Since the withdrawal of services, the Darwin market has continued to grow, driven largely by increased resources activity,” Parashos said.

With flights commencing from July 1, promotional fares for the Airbus A320 are now on sale.

“We’re excited to again provide Territorians with more choice and competition when it comes to their favourite holiday destination,” Dharmadi said.
