Fiji remains the giant of the South Pacific but other islands are gradually creeping up, according to Adventure World.

Head of product, sales and marketing, Di Moynihan, highlighted the Cook Islands as growing in popularity with a slightly older demographic which was increasingly venturing further afield.

“They want to go to the South Pacific, but they don’t just want to lie on a beach," she told Travel Today. She cited skin cancer concerns and a desire to immerse themselves in the local culture as key reasons people were turning their backs on the traditional fly and flop product.

But she admitted that other island destinations still faced tough competition from Fiji, despite these new trends.

“Fiji is huge compared to the other islands, but it was established in Australia many years ago,” she said. The abundance of major hotel groups present in the destination also meant more money was committed to marketing it to Australian travellers.

“Other islands don’t have those five-star properties,” she said.

Holidaymakers were also finding it difficult to differentiate one beach holiday destination from another, prompting Adventure World’s decision to unite all of its island destinations worldwide in one brochure for the first time.

The recently released 2012/13 Pacific and Beyond brochure features islands in Hawaii, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, the Maldives, Mauritius and the Seychelles in addition to the South Pacific destinations.

It also offers a Country Combo feature which enables travellers to discover more than one destination, catering to a growing trend for island-hopping.
