Brazil travellers advised to exercise caution as political riots continue

Smartraveller has advised travellers to exercise a ‘high degree of caution’ when travelling to Brazil off the back of consistent rioting in the nation’s capital in support of the former president Jair Bolsonaro.

The scenes, which have been compared to ‘the storming of the Capital’ on January 6 in Washington, erupted when leftist leader Luis Inacio Lula was sworn in as president on January 1 this year and have led the website to state:

“There’s an ongoing risk of violent protests across Brazil following the presidential inauguration on 1 January. The risk of protests could affect the availability of flights.

“Monitor the media, follow the instructions of local authorities and review our guidance on staying safe during demonstrations.”

Travellers have been advised to avoid these areas and other government buildings in Brasilia where there may be clashes between protesters and security forces.

On 24 December, police discovered an improvised explosive device near Brasilia airport and arrested an individual who said he planted it to provoke the army to intervene and annul the presidential inauguration. The risk of protests could affect availability of flights.

Brazil is one of 18 warnings that have been advised since the start of 2023 with others including Indonesia after its Parliament passed revisions to its criminal code, including penalties for cohabitation and sex outside of marriage.
