Among surfers, this time of year is known as the bitey season.

A time when three man-eating species of shark (tiger, bull and great white) converge on Australia’s most popular beaches.

""

But spare a thought for our South African counterparts. The beaches around Cape Town are home to some of the world's densest populations of great white shark.

""

This is bad if you’re on the menu, but brilliant if you’re in search of a thrill like no other.

""

The area of Gaansbaii on South Africa’s Garden Route is the mecca of cage diving – the practice climbing inside a flimsy contraption and staring down the world’s most feared predator.

""

Growing up to six metres in length, weighing more than 2500kg and packing 230 teeth in its phenomenally powerful jaws, it is thought that the great white gets through 50,000 gnashers in its 20 year lifetime.

""

According to the International Shark Attack File, there have been 2463 confirmed shark attacks around the world, of which 471 were fatal. This means that in terms of probability you’re more likely to be hit by lightning that killed by a shark.

""

If you are brave enough to try cage diving, Bench International offers five-day trips departing from Cape Town, priced at $799.
