Air growth slows but outlook positive for 2014
By admin

The pace of growth in air travel slowed towards the end of last year but the prospects of a strong 2014 remain bright, latest figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have shown.

Demand in November climbed just over 4% compared to the same month the previous year, but it was behind the 6.5% increase recorded in October.

Capacity jumped 6.1% which led to a load factor of 76.3%, a fall of 1.4 percentage points.

But with consumer and business confidence continuing to improve, IATA tipped the growth to accelerate.

“Demand growth hit a speed bump in November, but with continued modest improvements in economic conditions the outlook remains positive,” IATA director general and chief executive Tony Tyler said.

In Asia Pacific, a strong performance in China and Japan helped demand climb 5.5%. Load factors in the region fell 0.9 points as capacity increased almost 7%.

European carriers saw a 4.1% rise in demand, while in North America and the Middle East demand increased 1.7% and 9.7% respectively. Latin American experienced a 7% lift.

Africa was the only region to fall with traffic slipping 2%.

On the domestic front, Australian traffic fell 1% with IATA blaming a sluggish economy and rising unemployment.
