Aussies taking risks by travelling uninsured

Aussies taking risks by travelling uninsured

Almost one third of Australians are putting themselves at risk by travelling without insurance, according to new research.

The independent research carried out by insurance provider SureSave analysed Australian travellers’ opinions on the importance of purchasing travel insurance.

The results found that 31% of people do not think it is necessary for every trip, with 23% stating that they ‘only sometimes’ purchase travel insurance, and a further 8% saying they ‘rarely’ purchase a policy.

Of the 23% of Australians who said they purchase travel insurance ‘only sometimes’, the majority said they would purchase insurance if they considered their intended destination to be risky.

While travellers can be at a higher risk of illness and injury in certain destinations, the reality is that anything can happen whilst travelling, according to Michael Callaghan, executive general manager at SureSave.

“Travel insurance is a small price to pay for peace of mind when travelling," Callaghan said.

The research also shows that older age groups placed a much higher importance on travel insurance, with a higher majority of Gen X and Baby Boomers stating that they always purchase insurance.

Women were also more likely than men to be insured whilst travelling.
