Virgin announces massive competition encouraging Aussies to get vaccinated

Virgin Australia has unveiled a massive national competition giving fully-vaccinated Aussies the chance to win a share in tens of thousands of dollars of prizes, with one lucky punter set to become a Velocity Points millionaire.

The airline plans to kick off its ‘VA-X & Win’ competition later this year once all adults are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

The competition will be open to all Aussie residents over the age of 18 who have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine once eligibility to get the jab is open to all adults.

Details of all prizes on offer will be revealed when the competition opens, but the airline said it will give away dozens of free business-class flights and one lucky Australian will become a Velocity Frequent Flyer Points millionaire.

Virgin team members who get vaccinated will also have the opportunity to win prizes, including additional annual leave, lounge memberships and free business-class flights.

The airline is also making it easy for team members to attend vaccination appointments, today announcing it will provide flexible working arrangements where possible for employees to receive both injections.

Sixty-five per cent of the airline’s frontline team members (cabin crew, pilots and airport workers) have been vaccinated or are registered to be vaccinated, according to an internal survey.

A spokesperson for Virgin said the airline has a responsibility to “use its voice” to encourage Aussies to get vaccinated.

“What the latest lockdown in Melbourne and the evolving situation in Sydney has taught us, is the sooner we can all get vaccinated, the sooner we can get on with our lives, without the constant fear and uncertainty that come with lockdowns, restrictions and closed borders,” they said.

“Most importantly, the sooner all Australians are vaccinated, the sooner our most vulnerable members of society will be protected.

“As an industry that’s been severely affected by COVID-19, we want to do all we can to help vaccinate the population, and it makes sense to reward and encourage our colleagues who have been on the frontline of this pandemic, in this journey.”

Virgin is the latest travel provider to offer an incentive for Australians to get vaccinated, with both Qantas and Luxury Escapes having already announced reward schemes for travellers who get the jab.
