SeaDream tears up contract for new ship
SeaDream Yacht Club and Damen have decided not to proceed with the building of a new ship for SeaDream.
A statement issued by the cruise company said the decision was made “in good faith and with mutual understanding”, and “both parties are open to potential future projects and collaboration”.
The new ship, SeaDream Innovation, was scheduled to be delivered in September 2021, after receiving a grant for US$1.8 million ($2.6 million) for the creation of the revolutionary vessel from Enova, an organisation owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment.
“The response from our past guests and the market in general has been overwhelming, despite the ship not being scheduled for delivery for almost two years,” SeaDream executive vice president Andreas Brynestad said.
“Since the ship will not be delivered, all booked guests will be contacted and issued full refunds in the coming days.”
SeaDream owner and chairman Atle Brynestad said the company is actively pursuing other newbuild opportunities.
“The company has been debt free for several years and has the equity needed to expand the fleet. We hope to announce a new ship in 2020.”
Current plans of refurbishing the suites on SeaDream I and SeaDream II will proceed as previously announced and planned, starting with the latter ship in spring 2020.
