Australia is among nine other countries that can claim bragging rights as being home to the best cities for senior tourists.

Edinburgh, Vienna, Brisbane, Vancouver, and San Francisco are the five best cities in the world for senior travellers to visit overall, according to an index created by travel insurance comparison site InsureMyTrip.

Geneva, Zurich, Prague, Hamburg, and Rome round out the top 10 of the index, which was dominated by European destinations.

Calton Hill, Edinburgh: Edinburgh boasts a solid healthcare system, an historic culture and the most accessible transport for those with limited walking ability.

Australia was considered the best country for seniors prioritising space when they travel, with some of the least densely populated cities in the world. Half of the top 10 most spacious cities analysed are from Australia (Brisbane, Canberra, Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney).

In order to discover the best destinations for senior travellers, InsureMyTrip standardised current data from Google Travel, TourRadar, the Health Care Index, the Global Peace Index, Topographic Map, the Global Mobility Ranking, and the World Population Review.

Brisbane City: Thanks to a wealth of space and sought after wildlife experiences, Brisbane scored highly as the third best destination for senior tourists.

These sources were used to determine the quality of a destination’s choice of senior tours, access to transport services, healthcare, and ease of walking.

On the other end of the 75 destinations rated, Mumbai, Kolkata, Cairo, Manila and Johnanessburg ranked as the top five worst destinations in the world to visit as a senior citizen, according to InsureMyTrip.

Mumbai scored poorly for its access to transport services, choice of senior tours, and quality of things to do, while Kolkata and Cairo ranked poorly due to severely low scores across multiple categories analysed. Their healthcare services received poor scores, at 3.4 and 0.01 out of 10 respectively.

Mexico City, Istanbul, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, and Sao Paulo made up the remaining spots in the list of worst cities for seniors.
