STUDY: 50 per cent of Aussies say ‘me time’ drives travel choices

A new study has revealed the chance to have some time to ourselves is driving Australians to travel more often.

According to the survey by Comparetravelinsurance.com.au, 50 per cent of respondents said that time alone prompts them to hit the road.

Natalie Ball, director at Comparetravelinsurance.com.au, said the survey reflected a growing trend toward solo travel in the smartphone era.

“Thanks to increasing resources … travellers can now navigate the world on their own terms. Travel apps, translation tools and social media have made it simpler than ever to take off, unencumbered,” she said.

Ball noted that an increasing reliance on modern technology has also played a hand in the rise of solo travel.

“Our devices have us connected 24/7, so the desire to ‘unplug’ and wind down has never been stronger,” she said.

“In today’s fast-paced world a holiday is the perfect opportunity to get off the grid and do exactly what you want.”

The survey also revealed that women of all ages are part of a growing market keen to take solo journeys, with those between the ages of 55 to 64 the market most inclined to take a solo sojourn at 55 per cent, followed by women aged 18 to 24 (53 per cent).

“Interestingly, our survey showed a specific surge in solo travel from the middle-aged female demographic,” Ball said.

“Given that women in this age-bracket often have many competing demands on their time, it makes sense that a growing number would seek out the opportunity to travel alone.”

Ball also noted that today’s solo female travellers aren’t necessarily single either.

“Today’s female traveller may have a partner who is unwilling or unable to accompany her,” she said.

“Many female travellers might like to seek out new connections or join up with friends along the way.”

The study found that soul-searching expeditions and wilderness retreats have gained traction for female travellers, with many seeking a chance to ‘find themselves’ and connect with like-minded women.

“We have noticed an upswing in wellness and yoga retreats,” Ball said, adding that “women are exploring the world in all types of capacities”.
