Busted: Couple charged $30,000 for phony holiday insurance claim

A British couple, who demanded thousands of dollars in compensation after claiming they had food poisoning, have been caught out by their insurance company after posting pool-side pictures on Facebook.

And were fined a whopping £15,000 (almost $30,000 aud).

The Liverpool based couple, Chelsea Devine, 21, and Jamie Melling, 22, claimed they had fallen ill during a ten-day all-inclusive trip to Benidorm in Spain in 2015, reports Metro.

A few months later, each submitted claims demanding £2,500 (about $4500 aud) in compensation.

But the pair made the fatal error of posting multiple pictures of themselves thoroughly enjoying their trip and looking very healthy.

A rookie error indeed.

The judge at Liverpool Local court, Recorder Sally Hetfield, said the couple had not been able to prove they were ill, according to Metro.

“I cannot accept that they would upload photographs of themselves as a happy couple if the holiday was as they claim,” she said.

“The statements are identical. They say that they did not collude, but it is clear the statements were not written by them.”

“There are inaccuracies in them.”

She went on to say the couple also failed to mention to hotel staff or anyone back home that they were ill, which comes across as a bit sus if you ask us.
