The post-divorce travel trend you can sell

The post-divorce travel trend you can sell

Travellers are showing a new trend of jumping on a plane and jetting off after a divorce, with Liberty Travel in the US dubbing it the “start-anew-moon” trend.

According to Travel Weekly US, travel agents are starting to notice a rise in newly divorced men and women wanting to plan a trip. In Australia in 2015, there were 48,517 divorces, an increase of 4.3 per cent.

While it is an unusual niche to consider, it has taken off in the travel industry with a rising demand for post-divorce adventures.

“Lately, we have been hearing more and more people tell us the reason for the trip is to mark the finalisation of a divorce,”  Senior Vice President of Liberty Travel, Christina Pedroni told Travel Weekly US.

More or less the opposite to a honeymoon, a “start-anew-moon” is taking off as the opportunity for newly single travellers to bounce back from a marriage breakup and go travelling either solo or with a group of friends.

“They are seeing it, and they’re booking them, and some of them have even taken some of their own,” Pedroni said.

“It’s definitely becoming more of a trend.”

Empty nesters – who are now without a spouse – tend to have bigger budgets and are flexible with travel choices, according to Pedroni. She also said that there was an increase of single parents organising trips with their kids to spend some quality time that may have been lost during a divorce.

Pedroni told Travel Weekly US that suppliers are also catching on to the trend.

“There are a lot of hotel partners out there that are noticing this as well, and they’re putting together some really unique packages geared toward this customer,” she said.

Travel Weekly US reported that Breathless Resorts and Spas provide divorce packages that include gifts, cocktails, nightclub experiences and a “trash the memory’ ceremony that involves breaking a piñata with a photo of an ex.

With travel more and more accessible, and the desire to jetset across the world increasing, the post-divorce travel trend is here to stay.
