“Disappointed” Bestjet reacts to ATAS ruling

Online retailer Bestjet has branded the decision of Queensland’s Supreme Court regarding the renewal of its ATAS membership as “disappointing”.

Earlier this week, Queensland’s Supreme Court refused to grant a further injunction against the Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA) after the industry body decided against renewing its ATAS accreditation last month. It had granted an interim injunction last month, restraining AFTA from acting on the decision to refuse renewal which Bestjet claimed was a “breach of contract, oppressive conduct and an unlawful restraint of trade”.

However, the latest ruling was swiftly followed by AFTA’s confirmation that the company had been removed from its membership list and that is was no longer ATAS-accredited.

Bestjet managing director Rachel James said that she remains proud of her company’s achievements and is looking to the future, despite numerous challenges.

“We will continue to follow its strict corporate governance which has helped make the business one of Australia’s fastest growing online travel agency websites,” she said.

“This is a very competitive market and a challenging time for independent operators in this industry.”

A final hearing will take place, with the date yet to be confirmed.
