Qantas First Class lounge put to test

Heirloom tomatoes, spaghetti with white wine braised bacon and banana cream profiteroles with pecan caramel – there’s a lot to love for those lucky enough to gain access to Qantas’ Sydney first class lounge.

Four times a year, with the changing season, Qantas change their First class lounge menus.

Here’s our pick of what’s on offer for autumn if you’re lucky enough to make it in.

ENTREE For something simple, fresh and tasty the buffalo mozzarella with heirloom tomatoes in basil and balsamic vinegar is a delight. The red, green and yellow tomatoes drizzled in the dressing are perfect with a crisp glass of white wine. It’s great for a small bite to eat if you’re rushing to your flight, or if you’ve had a big lunch already.

MAIN It’s hard to choose the best main dish between the delicious fragrant steamed blue eye cod with pickled daikon, sesame and shiso vinaigrette and the simple but incredibly tasty spaghetti. The spaghetti dish is hearty and fresh with roast tomato sauce and parmesan but it’s elevated to a while new level by the addition of white wine braised bacon chunks that will leave you wanting more.

SIDES Overhead in the lounge was a women saying “you can’t go past a Rockpool salad” and that’s certainly true. The best of the side dishes would have to be the mixed leaves with palm sugar vinaigrette, but if you’re having something more substantial perhaps opt for the steamed seasonal greens with lemon oil.

DESSERT There’s always room for dessert and there should be with the lounge now having mouth watering profiteroles on the autumn menu. But these aren’t your usual whipped cream stuffed, chocolate covered bakery variety. The first lounge passengers are actually scoffing down banana cream profiteroles with pecan caramel and yoghurt sorbet. Make sure you leave enough time to add this onto your plate.

THE STAPLE There’s also one entree on the menu that Qantas will never remove. Tried and tested and incredibly tasty, the salt and pepper squid is ordered by almost one-quarter of the passengers that go though the First Lounge. Dipped lightly in egg white and then coated in flour the squid is then deep fried and served with green chilli sauce and aioli. It’s without a doubt the best item on the menu.

It’s hard to believe Qantas’s ground service is so good yet their onboard product – hard and soft – is so bad.
