Mayhem in France as 70% of flights face cancellation

Depressed traveler waiting at airport after flights delays and cancellations

A major union strike is causing chaos in France with an estimated 70 per cent of flights expected to be impacted.

France’s leading aviation association has said there could be major disruption at Paris’ two airports if traffic controllers go ahead with the one-day strike on Thursday.

Flights in and out of the European country are expected to be disrupted due to the imminent strike action.

The union decided to go on strike after a breakdown in salary negotiations as well as other measures in the planned overhaul of France’s air traffic control system.

The strikes have reportedly raised concerns about the risk of disruption during the upcoming 2024 summer Olympics which will be held in Paris.

The air traffic union has said they will strike over a busy May weekend period if demands are not met.

Pascal de Izaguirre, head of FNAM, an umbrella group of French aviation industry unions, said 75 per cent of flights could be cancelled at Paris Orly airport and 65 per cent at Paris Charles de Gaulle could be cancelled.

On top of the cancellations, an unnamed source from the union said they expect there to be “major delays”.

The union – the SNCTA – has also said it could strike for three days from May the 9th to May the 11th.

They gave the authorities two weeks to recommence salary negotiations with them.
