Tourism growth raises jobs concerns

The industry will need an additional 123,000 additional workers to meet visitor demand in the next five years, a new report has revealed.

The figures, revealed by the Australian Tourism Labour Force Report, shines further light on a growing challenge for the industry as it continues to grow at a forecast rate of 3.8% on average over the next 10 years.

Australian Tourism Export Council managing director Peter Shelley highlighted the ongoing difficulties tourism business face in attracting and retaining staff as a major challenge in filling the predicted increase.

“Now is the time to re-assess the industry’s current training programs to ensure an alignment with the growth projections and that we are building the workforce with specific job skills that will be in demand in the future,” he said.

“This report shows how critical it is for the Federal Government to recognise the opportunity for job generation and work with the industry to maximise the opportunity for jobs across the country.”

Shelley stressed that ensuring the demand is met would be “vital” for Australia to compete in the international marketplace.

I am a tourism teacher at high school and at this stage for a young person they are very impressionable and could be attracted/converted to a travel industry career if the industry was more forthcoming! It is incredibly hard to find worthwhile work placements for students and difficult to set up excursion/volunteer opportunities at trade shows etc. where exposure to the industry and industry staff would be really beneficial. To all industry leaders can you please engage with educators more, as this could help drive your recruitment processes
