Great Scot! Britain’s on fire!

Great Britain continues its domination as one of the leading destinations for Australian visitors, and not just when the RWC is on.

Last year one million Aussies travelled to England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and dropped a hefty wad amounting to A$2.5 billion over 15 million nights. And not all was spent on Paddington Bears.

While expenditure and duration were up 15% year on year, key progress was made on the increased amount of Aussies who ventured further afield as shown through regional visitation growth.

VisitBritain insights and communications manager, Australia, Kristen Angus, told Travel Weekly Australians were a billion pound market for Britain and very welcome as they “explore really well”. Travellers to Scotland rose 14%, while North England’s accents clearly attracted Aussies as shown by a 22% increase in unique visits.

So what’s in store for Aussies in 2016? Angus explained that adventure tourism, design and a tequila restaurant in the Isle of Wight were hot attractions this year, but the Queen’s 90th birthday bash would be a not-to-miss event for Royalists.

Next year marks the “Year of the English Garden”, with a spotlight on over 200 iconic sights the famed Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown created, effectively changing the face of eighteenth century England through his design of country estates and mansions.
