Virgin and Jetstar cancel all Bali flights

Virgin and Jetstar cancel all Bali flights

In the ongoing saga that is Mount Raung, both Virgin Australia and Jetstar have cancelled today’s flights due to volcanic ash in the air.

Virgin has canned every flight scheduled for today, while Jetstar has cancelled five flights, between Bali and Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne, as well as the Singapore via Bali to Perth service.

Virgin said in a statement this morning that conditions are “not suitable” for flying.

“We have been advised that Mt Raung continues to erupt and winds are blowing in an unfavourable direction, and are forecast to continue to do so for the rest of the day,” the airline said.

A full list of those flights cancelled is included below.

“Virgin Australia will provide another update on tomorrow’s operations to the media at around 9am tomorrow morning, Friday 7 August.”

Virgin Australia is advising guests currently in Bali not to travel to Denpasar Airport without a confirmed rebooked flight.

The airlines will review flight changes based on information from the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre.

Grace Legge from the Bureau of Meteorology’s Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre said damaging plumes could move closer to Denpasar this afternoon.

Legge said the ash cloud was not above Denpasar at the moment, but strong westerly winds may push the ash over the city.

“It’s entirely up to the airlines if they decide it’s safe or not, they will have their own criteria for what is safe and what isn’t,” she said.

The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre said the engine could be damaged if aircraft flew through ash.
