The parents of Victorian skier Jake Kermond are “pretty fragile” following news that Canadian homicide detectives are treating their son’s death as suspicious, a relative says.

Mr Kermond’s body was found by a dirt biker on June 17 in a gravel pit in an industrial area near the ski village of Whistler.

The 19-year-old from Harrietville in the state’s alpine region had last been seen about 7.30pm on April 26 while leaving the Adara Hotel.

The British Columbia Coroners Service and detectives worked together to positively identify the body.

“Although Jake’s death remains suspicious, foul play has yet to be confirmed,” Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s integrated homicide investigation team spokeswoman, Sergeant Stephanie Ashton, told the Vancouver Sun.

One of the young man’s relatives in Victoria told AAP the positive identification had left Mr Kermond’s mother and stepfather, Natalie and Kevin Raymond, “pretty fragile”.

Another family member, Jack Raymond, paid tribute on Facebook to his “brother and homie”.

“We stood side by side for the first 18 years of our life’s … every minute i spent kicking it with you i will cherish forever (sic),” he wrote.

His family had told Canadian police they had not heard from Mr Kermond since he disappeared and there was no activity on his phone or social media.

The teenager, who graduated from Bright P-12 College last year, went to Whistler in March and was reported missing by hotel staff on April 30.

Some of his belongings are missing, including his Armada skis with blue and orange binding.

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward, particularly those who knew Mr Kermond in the days before his disappearance and ultimately his death.
