Mars One offers an out of this world experience

If you ever saw the Rocket Clock on Playschool, you may have been fascinated by space from an early age. Imagine being able to be one of the rare and lucky people who are skilled and experienced enough in their field to hop into a rocket and jet off into the dark abyss.

If travelling to space has always been an interest for you, then there’s a new mission brewing which would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Literally.

“Mars One is a not-for-profit foundation that will establish a permanent human settlement on Mars in 2023,” the website of Mars One states.

The company is currently accepting applications with the only catch that you won’t be coming back.

Some of the requirements for becoming a Mars One astronaut include the ability to trust yourself and others, to know your boundaries as well as having a “can-do” attitude. The height specifications are 157-190cm, you have to be over 18 and demonstrate good overall health and fitness levels.

After an intensive selection process, groups of four will train together for years before the initial departure date. Mars One expects at least six groups to be ready for the anticipated departure, however only one team of four will head off first.

While it might be a little daunting for some to head up to space knowing they will never return to see their friends and families again, the Mars One website insists the Mars residents will still be able to contact their loved ones. While a phone call wouldn’t be practical due to the time delay, “there would be no limitations to email, texting or 'WhatsApping' with the Mars residents,” the Mars One website explains. It would just take about six minutes for a reply.

If you’re interested in making history and being one of the first people to set up camp on the red planet, this one-way expedition might just be perfect for you. Or if you’re not so sure, hop onto the website where you can view other applicants and rate what you think of them.
