What are Aussies lusting for?

Recent research by the Yellow Brick Road Wealth Management has revealed that travel and seeing the world tops the list of Australia’s hopes and dreams.

The research by Yellow Brick Road Wealth Management revealed travelling as the ultimate Australian dream, surpassing buying a first home, getting debt under control, paying off the mortgage and owning a business.

Yellow Brick Road executive chairman, Mark Bouris said these top five dreams represent a country that values lifestyle, property and entrepreneurship.

“Australia is a nation of holidaymakers and globetrotters and the research showed that we haven’t lost our travel bug. People across the country told us their biggest dream is to see the world,” he said.

Owning a home was the second biggest dream of Australians.

The 6,500 respondents of Yellow Brick Road’s Hopes and Dreams Survey chose from thirty aspirations under several categories.

Lifestyle dreams, including travelling, were most popular (24 percent), followed closely by property (23 percent), family (21 percent), money (13 percent), career (11 percent) and retirement (9 percent).

Participants’ responses also varied greatly across the country, giving an interesting insight into the differences across the states and territories.

People living in Ipswitch, QLD are in the market for a boat more than anywhere else – probably so they can set sail on the seven seas, while in Frankston, VIC, it’s all about upgrading your car.

In the Riverina region of NSW people hope to get married, while in northern WA residents are keen to get their debt under control.

In Sydney alone, the differences between suburbs were marked. For example, those residing in the Inner West were more likely to want a family, compared to North Shore dwellers whose biggest aspirations were property and investment, with no plans of retiring.

Bouris said these differences represent the diverse ambitions of Australians and reveal how economic conditions, the housing market and even climate affect aspirations.

Bouris also expressed concern that Australians don’t achieve their travel aspirations due to their failure to plan.

“Australians are known to value quality lifestyle and there is nothing wrong with wanting to take an annual overseas holiday. However, many people don’t achieve these goals due to their failure to plan.” he said.

“Seeking advice and creating a plan can make turning your dreams into reality a whole lot easier than you imagine.”
