On 28 October, the Women in Tourism lunch will be held at the Australian National Maritime Museum, and will focus on confidence, what is it, why do you need it and how can you get more of it?

Recent research revealed nearly 40 percent of women struggled to ask for a payrise/promotion while 83 percent of women surveyed said they want to feel more confident in a professional situation.

When it comes to building confidence, preparation and practice seem to be the most common ways women address this issue. Courses like Toastmasters come up a lot as being useful tools, as well as leadership texts like ‘Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office’.

Some survey respondents admitted that their appearance dramatically affects their confidence and some women feel that a lack of confidence is more of an issue for women due to societal pressure to be ‘likable’.

The confidence lunch will be facilitated by Genevieve Matthews, who says, “How an individual measures their own level of confidence is a very unique and personal thing. We’ll be learning how to be more confident, what that measure would be and how to be able to dial up confidence to handle the personal and professional situations we face day in day out. It will often come down to the small incremental changes, tweaks and improvements we can make to how we think, what we say to ourselves and what do or don’t do daily.”
