Aside from the beautiful beaches, Fiji offers an abundance of activities.

While many people think of Fiji as a place with beautiful white beaches and clear blue water, there are so many incredible ways to experience Fiji by exploring the inland activities. Through hiking, rafting and village visits, visitors can experience Fiji from a unique perspective. Here are some of the best inland activities that can’t be missed.

 Tavoro FallsFiji Waterfall

Fiji’s Tavoro Falls in Taveuni Island is rich with lush, natural landscapes. Visitors can hike the series of three waterfalls, all within the Bouma National Heritage Park. The first waterfall is just a 10-minute hike. This waterfall makes the perfect spot for swimming with its deep pools and onsite changing room. To get to the second and third waterfalls, expect to block out half of a day. The hike is more challenging, but it’s worth it for the stunning views of the coast.

Upper Navua River RaftingWhuteWaterRaftingFiji

For a different view of the landscape, try experiencing Fiji from the river. Upper Navua river rafting lets visitors have a truly unique experience of Fiji. This river cuts through the island’s tropical interior, giving rafters a diverse view of the landscape. On their rafts, visitors see pristine tropical wilderness, waterfalls, deep canyons, black volcanic walls, and rainforest. This is a fantastic adventure for those who love the water but want to break up the usual beach routine.

If you are looking to take a break from all of the active experiences, check out Suva’s Fiji Museum. The museum displays artefacts from both Fiji’s modern and ancient history. A highlight of the museum is Ratu Finaua, a huge canoe that was used to transport warriors at sea. Also on display at the museum are Fijian musical instruments, jewellery and cooking utensils.  The artefacts  represent both the indigenous people and those who settled in the island over the past 200 years.

Sigatoka Sand dunes

Sand Dunes National Park, Sigatoka, Fiji

The grey sandy dunes have been forming over millions of years and are rich with archaeological history. The dunes are windblown and rugged, spanning 5km long and 1km wide. This is one of Fiji’s natural highlights and visitors can explore the Dunes on a one or two-hour walking course. While exploring, many visitors see ancient pottery and tools scattered in the sand.

Village Visits

Mari Mari Cultural Village Rungus

Visiting a traditional village in Fiji is the best way to understand the culture. The Fijians are a warm and friendly people and they often make guests feel at home with a traditional welcoming ceremony. The villages are very scenic and many still have the traditional thatch bures (houses). People living in villages tend to live a very communal lifestyle, and visitors will be warmly welcomed in to the community. Most Fijians live on the land just outside their homes. Daily tasks include hunting, fishing, and gathering firewood. It will be an experience unlike any other to explore the traditional village and gain insight into this lifestyle.

If this looks like the adventure of a lifetime, book your flights now and get the added benefit of being entered to win prizes! Right now, if you book flights to Fiji with Virgin Australia and accommodation with Excite Holidays, you’ll go into their daily draw to win one of the Fiji-inspired prizes, including places on their exclusive famil!
