Fiji Airways has today announced the launch of a new direct flight route between Canberra, Australia and Nadi, Fiji, commencing in July 2023.

The new route will operate twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays from July 21st to the end of September, and three times a week from October onwards.

The service was officially announced in Australia at Canberra Airport in collaboration with the Fijian Government, Fiji Airways, Canberra Airport, and the ACT Government. The inaugural flight is set for the 21st of July 2023, with bookings now open for guests.

From today, guests can book return Value fares from Canberra to Fiji with Fiji Airways for just $499 AUD. All economy fares include meals, beverages, inflight entertainment and carry-on baggage up to 7kg. Value fares also include 30kg of checked baggage. Business Class return airfares are available from $2,960 AUD.

Speaking of the new route, Fiji Airways CEO, André Viljoen said: “The new direct route between Canberra and Nadi marks another significant milestone for Fiji Airways as we continue to expand our network and provide greater connectivity for our customers.

We are thrilled to bring our world-class service to Canberra and connect Australia’s capital directly with our beautiful home, Fiji. We look forward to welcoming our customers on board and sharing the world-renowned Fijian hospitality that sets us apart.”

To mark the occasion, passengers at Canberra International Airport were treated to a traditional Fijian welcome, alongside a performance by Fijian dance group, VOU.

The announcement was also celebrated with a promotional flight this morning, on the 14th of April, bringing the Fijian Deputy Prime Minister, the Fijian Drua, and local fans to Canberra ahead of tonight’s match where The Drua will go head to head against the Brumbies at GIO Stadium in Canberra. Fiji Airways has also confirmed its sponsorship of the Brumbies for Super Rugby Pacific.

With the launch of this new route from July, Fiji Airways will operate 22 direct services to Fiji and offer the only direct service connecting Canberra to Nadi. Passengers can expect a world-class travel experience onboard Fiji Airways, with warm Fijian hospitality, exceptional service, and award-winning cuisine.

Fijian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, who attended the official unveiling ceremony in Canberra also expressed his enthusiasm for the new route, stating, “This new direct flight route between Canberra and Nadi is a testament to the strong partnership between the Fijian and Australian governments, and we are pleased to work with Fiji Airways, Canberra Airport, and Visit Canberra to make this service a reality.

“This new service will provide a seamless travel experience for Australians looking to visit Fiji, whether it’s for leisure or business purposes. The service will also help boost tourism and economic growth in Fiji, providing more job opportunities and further driving the industry forward. We welcome all visitors to our shores with open arms and invite them to experience the magic of Fiji.”

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr welcomed the announcement and said direct flights from Canberra to Fiji would be popular with people across the Canberra region. “This is a really exciting development and marks the return of international flights to Canberra.

Last year, I visited Fiji as part of the discussions between Fiji Airways and the ACT Government about this service and I’m excited to see a positive outcome. I have no doubt Canberrans and those across our region will be keen to make the most of this direct flight and experience everything these beautiful islands have to offer.”

Michael Thomson, Head of Aviation Canberra Airport, said “This new partnership between Fiji Airways, The ACT Government and Canberra Airport signals the return of direct international services to our city and puts Canberra back on the map. We are thrilled about this new opportunity – the magnificent holiday destination of Fiji and fast connections from Fiji to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu and Vancouver. We are excited to relaunch our international operations, including our International Departure Lounge – offering all passengers a high-quality business-class experience, and look forward to welcoming the first flight in July.”
