Airbus A321 Neo: The key to a sustainable future for Jetstar

Jetstar and Qantas group have set high goals for sustainability across the board, committing to an emission reduction of 25 per cent by 2030, and aim to be carbon neutral by 2050.

But how are they going to do it?

One of their biggest tools is the new fleet of Airbus A321 Neo aircraft, of which they are receiving both the long range (LR) and extra long range (XLR) models on a regular basis, enabling them to fly with a far larger fuel efficiency then previous aircraft and maximise the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel’s (SAF).

Speaking at an Airbus and Jetstar roundtable on 28 February hosted at the Avalon Airshow, Jetstar’s chief operating officer, Matt Franzi said Qantas group has high aims for sustainability in the coming years.

“Sustainability is a key part of our future and our strategy,” Franzi said.

“We’re focused on carbon emission reduction of 25 per cent by 2030 and carbon neutral by 2050.

“We focus on all of the areas from a sustainability perspective, so not just aircraft operations, but waste to landfill reductions, recyclables for the crew so they can effectively separate recyclables from waste (and) ultimately finding sustainable sources of products for our on board offerings.”

Airbus’ APAC president, Anand Stanley said their newest model opens new doors when it comes to sustainable airline operations.

“The A321 LR and more importantly the A321 NEO is the latest version of Airbus’ best selling single aisle product line,” Stanley said.

“It’s fitted with the latest generation engines from CFM international and incorporates several aerodynamic enhancements, including wing tip sharklet’s. Together these features deliver a step change in fuel efficiency and reduction in carbon emissions.

“This provides a strong platform on which Jetstar can advance its ambitions to ensure a sustainable future for it’s business.”

The new A321 NEO models are SAF ready and able to utilise a 50 per cent blend of biofuels as well as a create 3.5 per cent fuel burn improvement.

Air Asia and Cathay Pacific are among other carries in line to receive the new models, with Qantas also set to bolster its fleet with the A321 NEO in coming months.
