A consortium of Peru's Andino Investment Holding and Argentina's Corporacion America have won the rights to build a new airport for Peru's Cuzco region.

Consorcio Kuntur Wasi won the rights to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the airport in Chinchero, a town on the outskirts of the colonial city of Cuzco, on with a bid of $US264.7 million ($A285.98 million), Peru's private investment promotion agency, ProInversion said.

"The expectations are great because we're going to give Peru an airport that will promote investment and tourism," Andino Investment Holding CEO Carlos Vargas told RPP Noticias.

Vargas said the airport's an initial capacity will be five million passengers but the figure will rise to eight million in ensuing years.

He said the ariport will have links to destinations in South American countries including Argentina, Ecuador and Chile.

In 2010, that same consortium won concessions for airports in six southern Peruvian regions: Apurimac, Ayacucho, Puno, Madre de Dios, Arequipa and Tacna.

The new airport will cover an area of 40,000 square meters and will replace the existing Alejandro Velasco Astete air terminal, which services tourists visiting Cuzco and the nearby Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.
