Canterbury’s Mt Hutt ski area celebrated its opening day on Friday with plenty of snow and visitors.

Mt Hutt ski area manager James McKenzie officially opened the Summit Six chairlift with a bottle of Amisfield as a welcome for guests.

“It’s a picture perfect day with smiles all round and enthusiastic staff hyped for the start of the season,” McKenzie said.

Mt Hutt saw 45cm of snow fall at the top of the mountain, and 35cm at the base, with the latest snowfall just two days earlier, easing the workload of the snowmakers.

Among the first on the chairlift were Christchurch brothers Ben and Simon Yorston, who arrived early at 10pm Thursday night with father Mike.

The brothers braved the cold to secure their coveted claim as ‘First on the Chair’, even receiving t-shirts to prove it.

They were among the 700 guests who turned up to the mountain to welcome in the snow season.

“We opened with full facilities in the base building and the Summit Six Chair, Exhibition Quad Chair in operation as well as the magic carpet for our learners,” McKenzie said.
