International Rail moves beyond rail

International Rail moves beyond rail
By admin

International Rail is set to add to its core rail product by offering accommodation and rail itineraries from next month targeting what it says is a “niche market”.

This follows on from the company’s foray into ferry sales in February with bookings so far focused on the Greek Islands.

“We’ve got to keep diversifying… we are looking at a program designed for the independent traveller with a pre-defined itinerary,” International Rail director Jonathan Hume said.

The rail company will target families and honeymooners with the new itinerary range that will initially focus on Europe.

“It’s rail and accommodation for people who don’t want the coach tour but don’t want to plan it themselves. We’re seeing a niche market there,” Hume told Travel Today.

“We are going to make it modular so they join each other so France joins Italy joins Germany joins Switzerland so you can piece together what you want to do,” Hume added.

While bookings are up 20 to 25% on the same period last year, the withdrawal of France from the Eurail pass scheme has been a challenge for the company.

“France is one of the most popular countries to travel to by rail so that’s thrown us into a bit of a quandary,” Hume said.

“It’s up to us to guide customers but it’s certainly not ideal.”

The company remains optimistic however, with Hume expecting a big year for travel to Europe thanks to the high dollar.
