Australians are paying more for overseas hotels with price hikes across key holiday destinations, according to a new study.

A summer 2013 trends report compiled by HotelsCombined shows hotel rooms in Los Angeles have soared by an average of 30% to $171 while a stop over in Dubai will see tourists fork out an additional 33%.

Rates in the Nha Trang area of Vietnam meanwhile have shot up 27% to an average of $157, the research found.

Elsewhere, a stay on Boracay in the Philippines will set Aussies back $151, 27% more than the same time last year.

In Hawaii rates have increased 26% to $240.

The room increases were not just limited to overseas destinations. Darwin witnessed the steepest increase – 15% – with Sydney rates climbing 5% to $215 and Melbourne rooms up 7% to $181.

The Gold Coast, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide saw rises of 7%, 3%, 5% and 2% respectively.

Only Canberra of Australia’s major centres reported a decline but regional centres suffered with Newcastle and Katoomba in the Blue Mountains both seeing a sharp 15% fall in average room rates.

Kristen McKenzie, HotelsCombined head of community and public relations, said: “The continues interest and demand in South East Asia is likely affecting traffic to regional Australia destinations and we believe it will continue to dominate the board for tourism traffic and accommodation rate increases.”
