Deliberate act behind disappearance of MH370

Those on board Malaysia Airlines’ missing flight MH370 are being investigated as new evidence put a “deliberate action” at the heart of the disappearance with a hijacking looking increasingly likely.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Najib Razak revealed that new satellite information showed that the Boeing 777 aircraft’s communication system was disabled before it reached the east coast of peninsular Malaysia. Shortly after that, close to the border between Malaysia and Vietnam, the aircraft’s transponder was switched off.

“From this point onwards, the Royal Malaysian Air Force primary radar showed that an aircraft which was believed – but not confirmed – to be MH370 did indeed turn back,” he told a press conference.

“It then flew in a westerly direction back over peninsular Malaysia before turning northwest. Up until the point at which it left military primary radar coverage, these movements are consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane”.

The last confirmed communication between the plane and the satellite was recorded at 8.11 am Malaysian time on Saturday March 8. While the exact location of the aircraft at this time cannot be pinpointed due to the type of satellite data, Razak revealed it is likely to have been within one of two possible corridors – an area stretching from the border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to northern Thailand or a stretch from Indonesia to the southern Indian Ocean.

As a result, the search of the South China Sea will end with the efforts to be reassessed before being refocused elsewhere.

“In view of this latest development, the Malaysian authorities have refocused their investigation into the crew and passengers on board,” Razak continued.

“Despite media reports that the plane was hijacked, I wish to be very clear: we are still investigating all possibilities as to what caused MH370 to deviate from its original flight path.”

Meanwhile, Malaysia Airlines described the situation as “unprecedented” and, although it had been aware of these developments, stressed that it could not make them public until they had been verified.

“We were well aware of the ongoing media speculation during this period, and its effect on the families of those on board,” a statement said.

“Their anguish and distress increases with each passing day, with each fresh rumour, and with each false or misleading media report.”

Flight MH370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing was carrying 227 passengers, including six Australians, and 12 crew members when it disappeared on March 8.
