Aussies spending big in Britain

Australians spent a record $1.69 billion in the UK last year, the fourth biggest spenders, as VisitBritain vowed to build on the positive momentum created by the Olympics.

On a visit to Sydney, VisitBritain chairman Christopher Rodrigues described Australia as a "key source market" and said it was hoping to attract 1.2 million Aussies to Britain by 2020.

Spending by Australians is anticipated to hit $2.14b, up 42%.

Overall, UK tourism officials reported record spending in 2012 of $28.2b and set out targets to double that to $48b by the end of the decade.

Rodrigues again stressed the value and accessibility of Britain and said the country had got its "mojo" back.

"New partnerships such as the one we've just announced with Emirates enesure our forecasts are viable and Australia remains well serviced with competitive airfares," he said. "With the favourable exchange rate and excellent Australia-wide flight connections into all main British airports, there is no better time for Australians to visit and explore Britain's rich countryside, culture, herotage and of course world class sporting events."

UK minister for sport and tourism Hugh Robertson, speaking at a reception in Sydney last night, added: "The Olympics created a global platform to showcase the best of Britain to the world but we want to keep that momentum going."
