Trashed suitcase from Qantas flight sparks debate as to who is at fault

Members of a Qantas Facebook group are divided on whose fault a damaged suitcase is after a passenger shared a photo of a designer suitcase with a hole in it.

“I put a perfectly good Delsey suitcase on my flight from Hobart to Manila via Sydney and it came off with a hole smashed in the corner,” Lesley Rogers, told Yahoo Australia.

After reporting it to the Qantas baggage service in Manilla, Rogers said, “The lady said it was not going to be covered by Qantas.

“I was leaving the next day for Europe so replaced it with the same brand, but a smaller suitcase which cost me almost $800.”

A post by Rogers to a Qantas Facebook group has sparked debate surrounding whose fault the damaged baggage was.

“It sounds like an inferior-made suitcase,” one user, said.

“I would be going back to the manufacturer of the suitcase.”

Another commented, “Unfortunately your bag is not wrapped in cotton wool, carefully carried to the plane and delicately placed inside.”

“It travels on several conveyor belts, gets stacked in a bin, driven to a plane and conveyered [sic] up to the plane.

“Bags can be damaged.”

Other members of the group highlighted similar experiences, “Your damaged suitcase is claimable but a near-impossible process.”

“I am still waiting even to get a return email from my case in April.”

Others blamed the baggage handler rather than the airline.

The moral of the story, if you’re going to buy a suitcase worth $800, you have to be prepared for it to be destroyed.
