We don’t know about you, but this sedentary time has got us spending an unspeakable number of hours living out our travel fantasies vicariously through social media posts and videos.

In pre-COVID-19 times, apps like Instagram were seen as a fantastic source of travel inspo for those looking to book a trip, and it’s only grown in popularity since.

But where Instagram once reined supreme, TikTok has been gaining prominence.

According to research from Bounce, billions of people are using TikTok hashtags to escape to faraway places and keep themselves hungry to book their dream trips when the time is right to travel again.

Bounce analysed the view counts of popular travel destination hashtags to reveal the most popular destinations on TikTok and give insight into what destinations the platform’s users are craving most.

In the top spot (by over 150 billion views) was New York City, with views for videos featuring the hashtag #NYC totalling over 216 billion views, for its iconic skyscrapers, the huge Central Park, bright lights of Times Square, and the world-famous theatre scene.

The opulently modern UAE city of Dubai proved to be the second most popular destination for TikTokers with just over 37 billion views.

In third place, Turkey’s capital, Istanbul, racked up just under 17 billion views on TikTok, beating the likes of London, Paris, and Barcelona to third place for its unique clash of European and Asian culture and fascinating architecture.

Australian cities ranked slightly lower, with Sydney and Melbourne taking out the 16th and 17th spots respectively.
