“Cheers to still being alive!”: Tourist survives life-threatening Bali travel photos

An American tourist is lucky to be alive after unknowingly handling one of the world’s most venomous marine animals while on holiday.

The tourist, who goes by the Tiktok username kaylinmarie21, had no idea that she was holding a blue-ringed octopus on her holiday in Bali and posted a video of the moment to TikTok after discovering how dangerous the animal is.

“Called my dad crying,” she wrote on TikTok. “I actually held two of them in the same day. I tried to feed them oranges and played with them for a solid 20 minutes.”

The video shows the tourist holding the octopus in her hand as a friend splashes water on it, while the octopus moves around her palm.

“At the size of a golf ball and having a yellowish/brown colouring, it is easily able to camouflage itself into its surroundings,” Discovery’s Ocean’s Deadliest writes of the blue-ringed octopus.

“Although small in size, this octopus has powerful enough venom to kill humans with just one bite. With no known antidote, this makes it the most toxic known sea creature.”

It adds: “Though not considered an aggressive animal, the blue-ringed octopus will attack if provoked, and most attacks on humans occur only when the octopus has been picked out of its pool or stepped on.”

Clearly, kaylinmarie21 is very lucky to have lived to tell the tale on TikTok, with her video describing the moment of realisation having been viewed 1.4 million times.
