Jetstar doubles carry-on allowance (with a catch)

Jetstar, A320, At the airport, New Zealand, 19 November 2019

Qantas’ budget carrier will give its customers a fresh option to top-up their carry-on allowance.

Jetstar customers can now bring twice as much carry-on baggage on board flights, with the launch of a new “top-up option”.

For $19, passengers can now double their allowance for carry-on from seven to 14 kilograms on all Jetstar domestic and international flights, with the weight required to be spread across two bags – with neither allowed to weigh more than 10 kilograms, the airline advised.

Jetstar members currently receive seven kilograms of carry-on baggage as part of any Starter Fare.

In a statement on the announcement, Jetstar said the launch “will help more customers speed up their travel by skipping checking in baggage and then having to collect it at the arrivals carousel”. The new option is also subject to availability.

The airline advised that carry-on bag dimensions remain the same, with passengers’ main carry-on bag required to fit in overhead lockers and be no bigger than 56 centimetres (height) by 36 centimetres (width) by 23 centimetres (depth).

Smaller items should be placed under the seat in front, Jetstar explained.

And if you are a Club Jetstar member, there’s even better news: loyalty members will also receive a 20 per cent discount when they purchase the top-up as part of their flight booking.

Jetstar introduced its first paid carry-on option in 2018, which allowed travellers to boost their carry-on allowance by three kilograms. The airline advised that the new seven-kilogram top-up option replaces the earlier iteration.

Customers can also purchase a checked baggage allowance starting at 15 kilograms, up to 40 kilograms.
