Travel 2020 wish list: Gate 1 Travel Australia’s new tours

Twilight over Thessaloniki

Are you looking for the next big thing in travel? Wondering where to recommend, where to book and where to go in 2020?

Gate 1 Travel Australia has done the research and tailored product to match with its new tours and cruises. Check them out here:

  1. 15 Day Kaleidoscope of Greece

In a recent reader survey conducted by Travel + Leisure Australia, Greece came in the top ten preferred countries for Australians, with the Greek Islands rating number one for favourite regions. Combine this with statistics from a recent survey of inbound travellers to Greece, with Australian visitors to Greece up 91 per cent from previous years, and it’s clear that Aussies cannot get enough.

Gate 1 Travel’s new tour takes in all the ‘hits’ – The Acropolis and the Temple of Apollo – and also goes off the beaten track for a food tour around Thessaloniki and a mushroom and truffle tasting in Kalambaka.

  1. 8 Day Central Mexico with Oaxaca

Start off your tour in Mexico City, where you will visit the world-famous National Museum of Anthropology, National Palace and Palacio de Bellas Artes. Explore Cuernavaca, known as the City of Eternal Spring and finish your journey in Oaxaca, the cultural heart of Mexico.

Learn how mezcal, the smoky cousin of tequila, is made, wander streets filled with Spanish colonial architecture, pop into galleries selling Dia De Los Muertos-inspired wares and taste vibrant local specialities such as the red, yellow, black and brown moles (cacao-based stews).

  1. 14 Day Enchanting Turkey

Silk Road countries are more popular than ever, and Turkey is the big mama of the old Ottoman Empire. Between a museum devoted to the Islamic poet Rumi and a visit to the city of Troy, immortalised in Homer’s epic poem The Iliad, Turkey has everything from literary culture to ancient architecture and geographic wonders like the thermal pools at Pamukkale’s ‘cotton castle’.

  1. Moselle and Rhine Cruises

If romantic castles and valleys full of old vines producing the wines of Moselle and Alsace sounds like your kind of thing, a river cruise through this region is bound to delight.

Visit Trier, Germany’s oldest city that was settled by the Celts in the 4th Century BC, marvel at St. Martin’s Cathedral and 2000-year-old Koblenz with its superb Romanesque architecture, and pop into cellar doors for tastings and long lunches.

  1. Uzbekistan

It’s all about ‘The ‘Stans’ in 2020 as experienced travellers look to lesser-known corners of the world. Did you know that the oldest copy of the Koran in the world is held in Tashkent’s Muyi Muborak Madrasa?

Visit this historic marvel before you head off down the Silk Road to explore the cultural treasures of this little known corner of the world. Learn how to make a traditional Pilav when you share dinner with a local family, relax in a yurt camp in the desert and take your credit card on an adventure at the ancient Siab Market.

  1. Greenland

If you watched the SBS series Vikings, you will have some idea about the remote beauty of Greenland and Iceland. With everything from the green swirling lights of the Aurora Borealis, to abundant geothermal activity and waterfalls with unpronounceable names, this is truly nature’s wonderland.

Check out some enormous icebergs, see musk oxen in the wild and explore an abandoned Viking settlement at Ivittuut. Visit Reykjavik and the village of Qaqortoq in southern Greenland, known for its colourful houses, to warm up.
