Qantas flight forced to return to Brisbane after tyre bursts mid-flight

Qantas flight forced to return to Brisbane after tyre bursts mid-flight

A QantasLink flight leaving Brisbane for Mackay has been forced to return after a tyre burst mid-air.

Flight QF2512, which was carrying 76 passengers, was scheduled to travel from Brisbane to Mackay on Sunday when one of its tyres burst mid-flight.

According to multiple reports, the plane was then forced to circle above the Sunshine Coast burning fuel for more than an hour before landing back at Brisbane Airport.

One passenger described hearing “a big bang” when the incident occurred.

“When we were taking off I was closing my eyes and sleeping and out of nowhere I heard a big bang,” passenger Gaurav Dogra told 7 News.

A Qantas spokesperson told Travel Weekly the incident did not result in an emergency landing.

“The flight returned to Brisbane after take-off due to an issue with one of the tyres and landed normally. These aircraft have six tyres and can safely land with a damaged tyre.”

Although a spokesperson for the airline advised passengers were accommodated on an available flight, multiple reports allege passengers were forced to wait another four hours before they were able to get back on a plane to their destination.

Last month, a Qantas A330 was forced to return to Perth after striking a bird shortly after leaving Perth Airport for Melbourne, with reports it hit an eagle.

Flight QF772 was airborne for little over 15 minutes after pilots observed a bird strike the outside casing of an engine, during the aircraft’s lift-off. A Qantas spokesperson told Travel Weekly there had been damage to the engine cowling.
