Margaret River: More than just a world-class wine region

Margaret River: More than just a world-class wine region

Home to some fantastic breweries and distilleries, WA’s Margaret River region has a lot more going for it than just wine.

With over a quarter of the premium wine in Australia coming out of the Margaret River region, whilst only contributing three per cent of Australia’s gross wine product, it’s no secret that the south west of WA is an amazing region for a drop of red or white.

Housing some of Australia’s best wineries such as Leeuwin Estate, Voyager Estate and Vasse Felix, the Margaret River region attracts wine-lovers from not only Australia, but across the globe.

However, what some visitors have perhaps overlooked in the last 20 years is the area’s exceptional brewery and distillery scene.

Beer-ness is booming

With 10 independent breweries in the area (making it the highest concentration of breweries in WA) and a swathe of other options for travellers, including some truly top-notch gin distilleries, the Margaret River region is becoming a hotspot for lovers of more than just wine.

The blending classes at the Margaret River Distilling Company’s ‘Giniversity’ are a great way to learn not only the history of gin, but also a great team activity for larger groups of travellers, and leaves each participant with a personalised bottle of their own creation.

The beachside region, also made famous for its rugged coastline and world-class surfing, plays host to enclaves such as the Caves Road Collective that, under its one roof, houses a winery, gin distillery and up-and-coming brewery, Black Brewing Co.

Keeping in touch with its south west roots, Black Brewing has teamed up with local surfing icon Taj Burrow to create a beer made from the sea water at his local break of Yallingup just 15 minutes north; one of the many that can be enjoyed on their exciting and informative brewery tours.

A five-star food escape

Topping off the gourmet experience for travellers venturing to this uniquely decadent coastal region is a variety of food and drink festivals, including the returning Western Australia Gourmet Escape between 8 and 17 November.
