The splendour of the Swan Valley

Swan Valley vineyards in Autumn

With all the charm of a rural farm region and just 25 minutes’ drive from Perth’s CBD, it’s not hard to see why travellers are flocking to the Swan Valley.

It’s Western Australia’s oldest wine region, and given its convenient location, anyone keen for a drop or a taste of some amazing local produce needs not look any further than “Perth’s pantry”.

Home to wineries, breweries, distilleries and countless gourmet artisan producers, the Swan Valley also shares a rich Aboriginal and Mediterranean migration history, both of which can be seen and felt throughout the region.

Wine not?

Visitors can dive straight into the world-class barrel of wine that is Sandalford Winery, one of the oldest wineries in the region (and also one of the best). It hosts an array of awesome musical acts and events all year round, such as John Farnham live in the vines on 8 December, and a new wine-themed music festival, Grapevine Gathering, to be held 1 December.

Sandalford is also hosting events as part of the Western Australian Gourmet Escape – a food and wine festival that has involved world-class chefs such as Nigella Lawson, Heston Blumenthal and Marco Pierre White.

If your clients are wine and chocolate lovers, they should pay Coward & Black a visit. The winery offers the best of both worlds thanks to its partnership with Margaret River Chocolate Company. Tasting masterclasses at its cellar door in Swan Valley will definitely satisfy the sweet tooths, with a $25 take-home bottle of chocolate liqueur to boot!

Gourmet goodness

Populated by 45 amazing wineries and produce stores, there is something for every gourmet taste imaginable in the Swan Valley.

With its all-local produce (mostly from WA’s native jarrah and karri trees), The House of Honey is a great way for travellers to discover mead or wine made from honey (the sparkling is splendid!).

The Cheese Barrel is another Swan Valley institution championing the gourmet feeling of the area, arising from the Olive Farm Wines winery as simply a place to match cheeses that has taken on a life of its own amongst the region’s 40-plus cellar doors.
