Three hotel guests found impaled by crossbow bolts

German police are investigating the deaths of five people in a rural Bavarian town, after three were found impaled by crossbow bolts at a hotel.

Local correspondent Passauer Neue Presse (PNP) broke the news on Saturday, reporting that a maid at an unnamed boarding house in Germany had discovered the bodies in a room alongside two crossbows and their bags.

The Local reported that a third crossbow packed in a bag was later discovered by police.

Reports on the incident at the weekend were unclear about the relationship between the three people – a man and woman, 53 and 33, from Hachenburg in Rhineland-Palatinate; and a woman, 30, from Lower Saxony.

The three deceased were found in their room containing a double and single bed; all of them had been shot with crossbow bolts.

The man and 33-year-old woman were found lying hand-in-hand on the bed with bolts to the head and chest, while the 30-year-old woman was found lying on the floor with a bolt to her chest.

German media reported that the trio had checked into the boarding house, which is on the banks of the river Ilz, without luggage the day before their bodies were located.

However, The Local has reported that the trio “returned to their cars later”, after the reception was closed, “to get the bags containing the crossbows”.

Multiple media reports have said that police later seized a white pick-up truck parked outside the boarding house, marked with stickers reportedly linked to a hunting club.

The hotel manager said the three, who were all German, had arrived on Friday and planned to stay for three nights, but they had not ordered breakfast, the BBC reported.

Furthermore, PNP reported on Monday that two more dead had been discovered by police at the apartment of the 30-year-old woman in Wittingten, Lower Saxony.

Police were reportedly visiting the apartment to inform relatives of the death of the 30-year-old woman when they discovered the bodies.

After nobody opened the apartment, neighbours were questioned, with some reporting that they had not seen anyone enter the building for some time.

Neighbours also told police of a “strange smell”, and that the mailbox was overflowing.

The investigation by German authorities continues.
