Airline sues passenger who tossed coins at plane engine for good luck

A passenger of a budget Chinese airline will now be thinking twice about performing any ‘good luck’ rituals in he future, in the wake of a $29,000 lawsuit against him.

Lucky Air is reportedly suing one of its passengers after he threw coins at a plane engine for good luck before boarding earlier this month.

Officials noticed two one yuan coins on the ground near the plane’s engine at Anqing Tianzhushan Airport, before the 28-year-old man identified as ‘Lu’ (his surname) admitted to tossing them at the engine, according to several media outlets.

The flight was cancelled over security concerns, forcing the 162 other passengers to fly out the next day to Kunming.

It has been reported that Lucky Air detained Lu, along with his wife and child who he was travelling with, for seven days over the offence. The airline is also pressing charges, claiming Lu’s ‘good luck’ coin toss caused roughly $29,000 in damages.

“The incident caused a direct economic loss of nearly 140,000 yuan, and our company will press charges against the passenger in accordance with the law,” Lucky Air said in a statement to media.

“Not only does tossing coins not give you good luck, it will endanger aviation safety and land you in detention. You could be fined and prosecuted.”
