A majority of travellers are picking destinations based on food
New research from Booking.com has found that 64 per cent of travellers are choosing their next travel destination based on its food and drink options.
We knew foodie travel was taking off, but this is ridiculous. Apparently, you guys all love food as much as we do.
Pulling data from over 50,000 travellers, the online booking platform also found more than a third of global travellers – rising to 40 per cent of millennials – plan to take a dedicated food adventure in 2018.
It’s also clear that our appetite is only increasing with almost half of global travellers still looking to be more adventurous with the type of cuisine they eat while travelling, rising to 60 per cent of millennials. One way to achieve this is to sample the local delicacy whilst travelling, with research showing 64 per cent global travellers will try to eat more local food in 2018.
Booking.com also used the reviews left by millions of travellers to determine the top destinations around the world to sample all the best food. Excuse us while we mope up all the drool from our desk.
Canggu, Indonesia
If you’re looking for healthy dishes then look no further than Canggu in Indonesia. Its streets are lined with vegan restaurants and smoothie bowl cafes and it’s a haven for those looking to taste healthier food options.

Miedzyzdroje, Poland
Bubble waffles are the newest Instagram craze and with nearly a third of travellers planning to take more food pictures on holiday, Miedzyzdroje in Poland makes for the perfect social media friendly destination with Instagrammable food around every corner.
The town is the second most endorsed destination in the world for waffles by Booking.com customers, with Brussels, Belgium, taking the top spot and Bruges, Belgium, taking third place. Apartmenty Horyzont Perla is the perfect location for checking out local delicacies and soaking up the sun at the beachfront. The apartments are a stone’s throw away from the town centre with the beach and Międzyzdroje Pier is also a short walk away.
Koyasan, Japan
With a tenth of global travellers worrying about whether dietary requirements will be met when on holiday, vegetarians need to look no further than Koyasan, Japan. Eat like monks and the villagers at one of the local vegetarian and vegan eateries offering a wide selection of meat-free options.
Koyasan Zofukuin is located in Mount Koya and offers traditional Japanese style accommodation housed within a Buddhist temple. Sample the amazing Buddhist vegetarian cuisine on offer at the property or enjoy the selection of local restaurants nearby. Koyasan is the top endorsed destination for vegetarian cuisine by Booking.com customers, with Chennai, India, and Mumbai, India, in second and third place.
Düsseldorf, Germany
Dusseldorf has the third largest Japanese community in Europe making it one of the best destination for indulging in Sushi outside of Japan. Along with Otaru and Toyama in Japan, Dusseldorf makes the top 20 list for sushi endorsements in the world by Booking.com customers.

Lviv, Ukraine
