RewardExpert has released a new latest study uncovering where the happiest and the grumpiest tourists call home.

And we have already put ourselves at the top of the world’s happiest travellers list because any chance to escape our cardboard-box sized apartment is literally the best time of our life.

The study looked at 3.5 million hotel reviews for 13,410 hotels in 70 countries, including reviewers from 83 countries.

Hotel review data was split into subsets according to the number of stars (on a one-to-five star scale), with the 955,754 reviews with one or two-star reviews indicating ‘grumpiness’, and the 1,384,241 reviews with five-star ratings, measuring ‘happiness’.

RewardExpert then calculated an average of these two, as a percentage of all reviews by visitors from each country of origin, in order to rank them on a scale from ‘grumpy’ to ‘happy’.

Spain topped the list of the most foul-tempered tourists, as they are most likely to leave one and two-star reviews (11.73 per cent), they are sixth most likely to leave a three-star review (18.68 per cent) and the fifth least likely to leave a five-star review.

Locals from Ireland, Iceland and Italy followed behind the Spanish.

On a more positive note, Russia took out first place for being home to the happiest travellers, with five-star reviews making up an impressively high 46.16 per cent of 70,775 reviews, and they also ranked last for grumpy one and two-star reviews.

Australia made the cut coming in fourth place, with five-star reviews making up 46.64 per cent of 164,137 reviews, and another 35.08 per cent were happy enough to give four stars.

Less than one in ten Aussies were grumpy enough to leave low reviews, and a solid four out of five Aussie tourists appear happy and satisfied with their holidays.

RewardExpert co-founder Vlad Tyschuk said: “We can’t help making snap judgements about groups of people based on our experiences or stories we’ve heard.”

“Some people may perceive the French to be lofty, the Germans to be stern, or the Japanese to be meticulous.”

“But setting all subjectivity aside, we wanted to determine which countries’ residents are the most fair or foul natured based on the numbers,” Tyschuk added.
