New research from Topdeck has revealed where younger travellers get their travel inspiration from, and it’s not as Instagram dominated as you would think.

The Topdeck Youth Travel Survey asked  18-35-year-olds from 101 countries (weighted more heavily in the UK, United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand) where they get their travel inspiration from and what their booking behaviours look like.

All respondents were most influenced by their friends, closely followed by Instagram and Facebook.

Interestingly, sales and promotions ranked higher than blogs and influencers, showing millennials are still on the lookout for the best deals over what’s trending.

The survey also found that when booking, Aussies were found to be the most likely to book through a travel agent with 40 per cent answering they usually book through an agent, followed by 28 per cent saying they book directly online.

Kiwis don’t seem too concerned about how they book with 34 per cent usually booking through a travel agent, and 29 per cent booking directly online. Kiwis were also found to be more likely to be concerned about price looking for the cheapest deals.

When it comes to the types of holidays younger travellers are interested in, the survey found that Aussie travellers are keen to experience a multi-destination holiday, and when asked what was more important to them “ticking off all bucket list destinations” rated the most important at 8.8 out of 10.
