Sydney tops most Instagrammed list, sorry Melbourne

Bondi beach, Sydney, NSW, Australia - November 1, 2015: People swimming in the fresh water swimming pools built in to the sea with waves rolling in to Bondi and breaking against the edge of the pool

Instagram has released its newest Year in Review data, and whilst it’s not super hard to guess the most Instagrammed place in Aus, it’s still fun to know for sure.

Aaaaaaand you guessed it, Bondi Beach wins! How many times have you seen the famous view of the Bondi Icebergs pool with Bondi Beach behind it? Be honest.

But even better than that, the top four most popular local geolocations are all in Sydney! Forget the world’s most liveable city, we’ve got the most instagrammed locations.

The top scorers are Bondi Beach, Sydney Opera House, Darling Harbour and Manly Beach. It’s not Sydney’s fault it’s so darn good looking.

It also topped the most Instagrammed Aussie cities list, which is as follows:

  1. Sydney
  2. Melbourne
  3. Brisbane
  4. Perth
  5. Gold Coast
  6. Adelaide
  7. Sunshine Coast
  8. Canberra
  9. Byron Bay
  10. Townsville

If you were as surprised as us to see Canberra before Byron, go Instagram it more. Byron needs your help.

On the findings, William Easton, (VP) Managing Director of Facebook and Instagram Australia and New Zealand said the Aussie presence is seriously growing on the app.

“Instagram has long connected people and brands with unique and creative content. 2017 was no different, with nine million Australians now using Instagram each month to explore the platform and connect to the community members and passion points that matter to them most.

“It’s been a huge year for Instagram, with many milestone moments taking place on the platform; local favourite Hugh Jackman has clawed the top spot of most followed Aussie on Instagram away from last year’s headliner Chris Hemsworth, Bondi Beach was the number one geotagged location in the country, and we saw Instagram Stories come to life, with Steph Claire-Smith being named the number one local story producer, as she had the most views,” he said.

The most Instrgammed city in the world went to New York, with Moscow, Russia of all places coming a close second.

Australia wasn’t on any of the most globally Instagrammed places but that’s probably because Aussies are travelling and hashtagging other places, thus giving places like New York and advantage over lil-ol Sydney.

The top travel hashtags are more basic than we thought:

  1. #travel
  2. #nature
  3. #sunset
  4. #trip
  5. #wanderlust
  6. #travelgram
  7. #vacation
  8. #instatravel
  9. #adventure
  10. #travelphotography

But Australia’s most used hashtag was probably the most basic of all.

“With #love being Australia’s most used hashtag for the second year in a row, we’re thrilled that the platform has continued to be a positive place for all community members.”

Whatever, we’re #love-ing it anyway.
