Australia ranks in Top Most Valuable Passports

Sweden came in at number one for the most valuable passport, while Australia made it into the list with an impressive ranking of 16.

The release of the Nomad Passport Index (NPI)  demonstrates the true value of citizenship in each country. It takes the information from the point of view of citizens who want freedom to minimise tax obligations, diversify wealth and travel freely without judgment.

The passport ranking of 199 countries are based on the following factors:

  • Visa-free travel – 50 per cent of ranking
  • Taxation – 20 per cent of ranking
  • Perception – 10 per cent of ranking
  • Dual citizenship – 10 per cent of ranking
  • Overall freedom – 10 per cent of ranking

Visa-free travel was the most important factor in determining the value of a passport. Germany came in first place, with access to 177 countries.

Australia were not too far behind with access to 169 countries.

Taxation was the second most important factor, and awarded from 10-50. The Unite States and Eritrea got the lowest score of 10, while Monaco, Brunei, the Bahamas, United Arab Emirates, Vanuatu, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Holy See, St Kitts and Nevis all reached a perfect score of 50.

For Australia, taxation was the major let down, given the second lowest score of 20.

Australia achieved a the top score of 50 for the other factors, Perception, Dual Citizenship and Overall Freedom.

The top ranked passport is the Swedish passport, allowing visa-free access to 176 countries, and achieving a top score of 50 for Perception, Dual-citizenship and Freedom. However, they scored 30 for taxation.

The top ten ranked passports were from Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Finland, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and Luxembourg. 

The least valuable passport was Afghanistan’s. Citizens can only travel visa-free to 25 countries and cannot hold dual-citizenship.
