When to snag an airfare special
Looking for a cheaper airfare on your next getaway? Us too. And now we’ve got an extra helper to get us those A+ fares.
Travel Search Site, Momondo have released their 2016 Annual Flight Study, and it’s a sneaky peek at what flight data looks like when it’s crunched and churned into a neat graph.
The study is aimed at showing travellers how they can save big bucks when booking flights, with Momondo aggregating the prices of over 13 billion fares across the top 100 routes, to produce final unbiased search results.
This includes data on when to book a flight, which day of the week is the cheapest to fly, and what time of the day is cheapest to fly.
Let’s get stuck in.
When to book…
56 Days before departure
Booking 56 days before departure will save consumers 28 per cent off flights. The most expensive time to book is (obviously) the date of departure. Don’t be fooled by the belief that you can bag a last-minute bargain. To truly get the best bang for your buck, plan your trip well in advance, and save big on your flights. Flights are a big part of planning a holiday, but no one wants all their money going towards it. By booking the magical number of 56 days in advance ( or at least close to it), you will have more spending money when you reach your holiday destination.
Which Day to Fly...
Tuesday
Consumers will find the best airfare deals on a Tuesday, while the most expensive flights are on Saturday. Flying out on Weekends is well-suited for Monday to Friday workers, and families with school children. Of course you guessed it, thats many the majority of us. Because flights are high in-demand, the prices rocket up. Business travellers tend to fly out at the begining of the week and fly back on Friday in time for the weekend. It appears mid week flights are the least in-demand, and so their prices tend to be lower. Time of day, the season and the destination are all factors affecting prices, but Tuesday seems to be your best bet in scoring the lowest airfare.
What time to Fly…
Evening
An evening flight (from sunset until sunrise) will offer the cheapest airfares, compared to morning flights. Typically evening flights are the least convenient for people, but they can work in your favour. Airports can be a lot quieter in the evenings and night, meaning fewer (if any) queues for check-in, security and boarding. Stress levels will also be down, as you avoided the daytime pandemonium, allowing you to chill out and recharge during your night flight before reaching your destination.
So whether you want to jetset overseas to destinations like Singapore; or stay within our Aussie shores and explore places like Perth, Momondo will deliver you the optimal price tag on any airfare.
